Licenses and Fishing in Hawaii (2025 Update)

Do You Need a Fishing License in Hawaii? 

If you’re planning to cast a line while visiting Hawaiʻi, here’s what you need to know: Since May 2024, the State of Hawaii now requires non-residents (15 and older) to have a fishing license for recreational saltwater fishing. Whether you’re fishing from shore, a pier, or a boat, this rule applies.

 

A Quick Guide for Visitors + Locals

Who Needs a License?

  • Non-Residents aged 15 and older.

  • Each person fishing must have their own license.

Who Doesn’t Need a License?

  • Hawaii residents (with valid ID).

  • Active duty military members and their immediate families.

  • Children 14 years old and younger. 

License Costs:

  • 1-Day License: $20

  • 7-Day License: $40

  • Annual License: $70

Licenses must be purchased at fishing.hawaii.gov and can be shown as either a printout or a digital copy.

Quick Tips:

  • You can change your license date up to 11:59 PM the day before.

  • Licenses are non-refundable.
